Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Hair Care Products?
Runway to every day beauty can be easily accomplished if you have the foundation of healthy hair. Let’s start with what you have at home or everyday habits.

Products today can be overwhelming. Do you truly understanding why you need products before you purchase? Educated buyers have healthier, happier hair, so  here are a few tips that will help you tame your tresses.

Look for maintenance & styling products that:
You don’t have to cocktail. (This can cost you $ and put stress on your hair.)
Give your hair strength by rebuilding your hair each time you use them.
Protect the cuticle (the outside of the hair shaft). In doing this, the products will give you a natural, beautiful shine.

Q & A: Week 1

Q: Does your hair lay down showing a consistent, smooth curl pattern from root to end?

A: If you answered yes, that shows you have strength in your hair. It is an advantage if you have movement in your hair with what we are creating on the runway. Learn how to use curl to your advantage so it retains the movement and bounce. This will help eliminate stressing your hair every time you style it. Even if your style is not about “laying down,” your hair should still have a consistent wave from root to end.

Suggestion:
Shampoo: always moisturize
Conditioner: moisture / leave-in (I recommend using both)
Rebuild: (Power B)
Look for styling products that are for fine hair, even if your hair isn’t - it’s a weight issue.

Q: Do you have a head of fuzzy, frizzy hair?

A: This is a big problem and one that is not easily solved, especially if you have had this problem for a while. Curly hair is sensitive and always in dire need of moisture. The last few seasons on the runway, styles have been very straight. Killer on the cortex, which is where your strength lies. It breaks it down every time you straighten it. So you have to work on rebuilding the strength and at the same time give it moisture every time you shampoo and condition your hair.

Suggestion:
Shampoo: just say no
Conditioner: loofah your scalp as you deep-condition (scalp scrubbers are inexpensive and available where you buy hair care products) and be sure to use a leave-in.
Rebuild: protein & moisture (Renew C & Power Repair B)
Your styling products need to have moisture in them.
Q: Everyone wants smooth, shiny hair that moves, but can you achieve that without it going flat?

A. Too much product!!!! This is when cocktailing has its problems, especially with summer coming. (Sunscreens, Protein, Moisture, Heat protectant, Styling aids.) This is what your hair needs each time you cleanse your scalp and restyle your hair. Once you learn to create movement in the interior layers of your hair and still smooth the top layer, your product is key.

Suggestion:
Products that have everything built into one shampoo, one conditioner and one styling product. Each of these products has the combination of what you need in them.
Q:  Are you trying a new style but your hair won’t respond to your product?

A: Fashion can inspire you to try something new, so if you get adventurous partake in your change.

Suggestion:
Book some extra time in the salon to work with you hair yourself and have your stylist observe your movements. Something as simple as the angle of your elbow can make a difference in the outcome of your style. Feel your hair each time something is added. Take notes and label steps on the bottles.

Color

Are you getting everything you want from your hair color?

Hair color, whether done at home or professionally, is something most everyone considers at one time or another.

L’Oreal Professionnel invented modern hair color in 1907. A century of experience provides a strong heritage that has resulted in superior, rich color and progressive conditioning and restructuring technologies. In my opinion, L'Oreal Professionnel has some of the world's most advanced technologies that can be used on your hair professionally.

The most common reasons to color hair are:
1) To change tone, deposit color or even just add shine. With today’s technology you have great options that rebuild the hair inside and out like never before.
Lets start with my favorite Demi-permanent color line, “Richess.” It offers everything that you can pack into a hair shaft and still blend up 50% gray. Your hair is lavished in color and full shine. Another great thing about this hair color is the fact that it is ammonia-free and requires only 9-volume developer.

This also means no line on the outgrowth, so no one will ever know. Key ingredients in this product include:

►  Ionene G restores, protects and continuously conditions. It rebuilds the core of your hair shaft as you color. (Zone A-surface & Zone B-cortex) (This ingredient is offered only in L’Oreal Professionnel)

► Incell Complex is a multi-dimensional ceramide that strengthens and reinforces the hair from the inside out. This provides a long-lasting conditioning result. (Zone B-cuticle) (Again, offered only in L’Oreal Professionnel)

► Oleo Elements recharge the hair fiber with nourishing lipids, works on the cuticle of the hair shaft. Your cuticle does many things but most important is how it protects your hair against the elements. (Zone B-cuticle)

► Apricot Kernel Oil nourishes and smoothes the surface. (Zone A-surface)

► Topcoat Polymer envelops the hair for added shine and helps protect the hair from external aggressions. (Zone A-surface)

2) To cover pigment-challenged hair (the inevitable grays). The good news is the molecules have changed, allowing the hair to retain color longer.
This is the Mac-Daddy - covering non-pigmented hair or taking the grays out of your hair. The big change that has happen in the professional world of hair color today is the shape of the colorant. In 1907 when Eugene Sweller invented the permanent molecule, it looked like a shape of a Tic Tac. Today, Majirel’s hair color molecule looks like a star fish. This helps retain the colorant in the hair shaft, thus producing longer lasting color.

For the health of the hair rebuilding is a must. Everyday your hair is stressed out by the elements. The longer the hair, the more time it has been exposed. If you would like to color, lighten and keep it long (more than 6 inches long) with Majirel, it’s vital to also have these elements in your hair color.

► Ionene G restores, protects and continuously conditions. It rebuilds the core of your hair shaft as you color. (Zone A-surface & Zone B-cortex) (offered only in L’Oreal Professionnel)

► Incell Complex This multi-dimensional ceramide strengthens and reinforces the hair from the inside out. This is a long-lasting conditioning result. (Zone B-cuticle) (offered only in L’Oreal Professionnel)

Highlighting

High Lighting Your Hair

Q. Is blonding taxing your hair?

A. Blonding of any form can ask a lot of your hair. So remember you have to be willing to do the maintenance and give back to your hair.

When we were children we were out in the sun and our hair color was lighter. Now, as we try to protect our skin, we're typically wearing hats and staying out of the sun in general. In turn, this doesn’t allow the sun to do its natural lightening processes. So consider this when you're deciding whether or not to highlight your hair:

Q. Does the lightener lower your hair lipid levels?

A. Lipids are the natural oil that is found in the hair. This is what keeps it shiny, soft and supple. Lightening with traditional power lighteners can significantly reduce the lipid level in the hair. This is one of the reasons why touch-ups can be tricky. You can’t overlap hair lighteners. You don’t always see the damage right away. Sometimes it may be months after highlighting that the damage will appear. Make sure your lightener has Lipids.

Q. How long is the tone that you walked out of the salon with really going to last in your hair?

A. This depends on what you have asked your hair to do and how you treat your hair after you leave the salon. Everything you do effects your tone. Let’s start with problems at home.
  • Light- use sunscreens and products that rebuild the hair core and cuticle.
  • Heat- this includes body heat from working out with a ball cap on, which can be killer on the hair. You need to strengthen the cuticle with Incell and Ceramites. Rinsing your hair in cool water to help take your body heat down can help.
  • Water-ok I understand we need clean water but it can remove tone as fast as a color remover if the cuticle is not responding to close. Don’t get me started on swimming for color or highlights. Don’t forget Tone is color. You could be a buttery blonde one day and orange head the next .

Do your homework before you choose to go blonde. Blonding of any form can ask a lot of your hair. So remember you have to be willing to do the maintenance and give back to your hair. Check out what makes a difference in Hair Rehab.

Summer Sun

Is your hair ready for the summer sun?

Whether you're off to a summer get-away or just spending more time in the sun at home, here are a few tips to help avoid problem hair:

Protein - you need it most when your style is not holding.

Moisture - lack of moisture is the most visible as frizzy hair.

Timing for color - touch-ups are fine but don’t make a big change before heading to the beach. The Colorist Collection can assist in retaining your tones.

Are your bottles ready for travel? Take your good products with you in a travel kit. Changing product when changing environments can create more problems.

To Cut or Not to Cut?

Most people think it’s time for a haircut when their hair feels ruff on the ends or the style is not working any more. Here are the facts:

Ruff ends - When your ends are feeling ruff you don’t have to cut 3-4 inches off.

Looking at ways to rebuild your cuticle will help you keep from cutting inches off your hair. Power B that has Ceramide will give you the glue to allow your cuticle to open and close. This allows your cuticle to truly do its function: open to receive moisture and close to protect.

Split ends - If you have split ends, you have fractured your hair end and it will work its way up your hair shaft. Treatment: Protein and removing a half-inch off the ends.

Falling style – Is your style no longer retaining its shape? Evening up your cut, you don’t always need a perimeter cut. Most often it’s the weight inside the cut. It’s normal to have certain areas grow faster and thicker than others. Only addressing the weighted areas and cutting a half-inch off can maintain your style without changing it or allow you to grow length without growing pains or stress of growing your hair.

To Perm or Not to Perm?

Are daily stresses affecting your tresses?

Stressed-out hair is a visible sign of stress that may be building up inside.

What to look for:
·        Inconsistencies from root to tip
·        Random curling in normally straight hair
·        Halo of fuzz that won’t settle down
·        Jumbled, torn or unnaturally wavy hair

While eliminating stress from your life may seem easier said than done, a few simple tricks can help your hair:
·        Power B treatments will replenish hair, rebuilding the cuticle.
·       Vitamin B3 will help maintain color and lower stress levels.
·       Get intense with deep conditioners like Absolut Repair for protein or Intense Repair for moisture from the Serie Expert L’Oréal Professional Line.

 Shampoo or not to Shampoo?

Shampoo or not to Shampoo?

It’s kind of deceiving. Sometimes shampoo can dry your hair creating uncontrollable curly frizz and doing more damaging than good.

Here is a way to test if shampooing is drying your hair out:
Use conditioner in place of your shampoo
Scrub your scalp with the pads of your finger tips – the goal is to exfoliate your scalp, use a scalp scrubber if you have one
While rinsing, leave a little behind on your ends.
This test will help you discover the natural movement in your hair. Next rebuild strength and cuticle of your hair with Serie Expert Treatments by L’Oreal Professionnel.

 Tips on Shampooing
Curly or Dry Hair

Tips on shampooing curly or dry hair

Sometimes changing habits are hard but if what you’re doing is not helping to tame your hair, there are options. Remember nature designed your hair and scalp for two different functions and you need to take care of it in two different ways.

After wetting your hair, apply conditioner first to hair lengths and ends (try L’oreal Proffessionnel’s Serie Expert Liss Ultime Polymer AR). This provides humidity protection.
Shampoo the scalp only with moisturizing shampoo, scrubbing with your pads of your fingers (try L’oreal Proffessionnel’s Serie Expert Liss Ultime Oil Incell). This provides nutrition to hair fiber while smoothing the cuticle and oils to maintain the scalp.
Don’t leave your hair bare to the world. It still needs help! Try a Smoothing Night Treatment for manageability or a Smoothing Leave In for humidity and moisture.

Are You Ready for Fall?

 Are you ready for Fall?

Whether you just came back from a summer get-away or just spent more time in the sun, here are a few tips to help you get your hair back in shape for fall:

Cuticle treatments are one of the best ways to mend the ends of your hair without cutting. Power B helps replace ceramide, which helps the cuticle open and close, and Powerdose Color helps rebuild the hair.
Protein–you need it most when your style is not holding. Try Renew C Treatment.
Moisture–lack of moisture is the most visible as frizzy hair –Liss Ultime Nuit will help.
Now is the time for color changes. Renew your tresses’ depth and tone before the holiday season. Richness and Lou hair color by L’Oreal Professionnel has the most health benefits for your hair. The Colorist Collection can also assist in retaining your tones.

 Signs of Damage

Does your scalp ever burn and then your hair is never the same afterwards? Has your scalp tingled when getting a chemical service?

Well it’s not supposed to! There are many signs that spring up though they are often ignored. Ignoring these signs can create further sensitivity or even permanent damage like hair loss.

Here's how to recognize that you are sensitizing your scalp and stressing out your hair:

• Anytime tingling on the scalp is accruing during a chemical service.
• Sunburned scalp, which can create just as much an issue as chemicals.
• Over-stressed hair that appears to be unruly or fussy.

Talk with your stylist about what can be done to prevent sensitizing your scalp. Start with products that help heal and protect your scalp before, during and after your service, including:

• Scalp and hair protectants.
• In-salon treatments like Renew C, Power Dose and Power B.
• Last resort, do an over-stressed hair cut twice a year.

Signs of Breakage

Have you ever run your fingers though your hair, wet or dry, and have hair that remains in your hand? This not normal!

Here are a few signs of breakage that are often ignored:

• Anytime your hair breaks off in your hands
• Excessive hair left in your brush
• New layers in your hair that you did not cut
• Over-stressed hair that appears to be unruly or fussy

Ignoring these signs can create further loss and potentially permanent damage, such as hair loss.

Here are a few tips to prevent damage or keep it from getting worse:

• Shampoo and condition with protein-based L’Oreal Professionnel Absolut Repair
• In-salon treatments like L’Oreal Professionnel Renew C and Power Dose
• Use Absolut Repair leave-in conditioner
• Don’t comb your hair when it’s wet!
• Last resort, do an over-stressed hair cut twice a year to save the hair bulb

 Back to Fall

The changes in weather, as well as seasonal lifestyle changes, means it’s time to put protein back into your hair and put away summertime products that are mostly designed for sun protection.

Protein mends damage created by the sun and strengthens the hair shaft. This helps prevent breakage as well as aids in style retention.

How can you get protein back in your hair?

·         Shampoos and conditioners, like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Absolut Repair line including conditioning masque, and leave-in conditioner.

·         In-salon treatments can provide intensive protein. Ask for Renew C or Power Doses. Simultaneous Power B treatments will help your hair react positively to and embrace the protein treatments.

Once you’re hair is in shape for the season:

·         Alternate shampoo and conditioning treatments with increased moisturizing treatments, like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Liss Ultime line.

·         Add vibrant shine with Liss Ultime Smoothing Night Treatment. This night-time leave-in hair masque also helps control wintertime frizz that tends to accompany the dryer, cooler air.

 Stressed Out

Emotional and physical stress can wreak havoc on hair.

The result: electrical charges running down the middle of the hair shaft, literally shocking the hair and shattering it from the inside out.

What can you do?

Eliminating stress from our lives is easier said than done. But it is important to get hair treatments that help prevent permanent damage. Start with in-salon treatments like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Power Cs.

If the damage cannot be repaired with in-salon treatments, the last resort may be an over-stressed haircut. This intensive cut involves a thorough investigation of each hair strand to determine its health.

A moderately stressed head of hair may have about 1,000 hairs that should be cut at the scalp to save the hair bulb and allow for new, healthy growth. By comparison, an average scalp has approximately 1,000 hairs per square inch. This cut may take 1.5 to 3 hours to complete, but will help prevent permanent hair loss and result in healthier, more manageable hair.

Today's Color Techniques

Modern color techniques mean less maintenance, less time in the chair and healthier hair.

Gone are the days of putting a color or lightner under a dryer! Many of today’s treatments are virtually instant. These new color technologies require newer techniques and less processing time. While the initial change of color technique may be a little more costly and take longer in the salon, maintaining the color is typically less expensive and you can go longer between salon visits.

“With today’s color, I can do highlights and lowlights at the same time, without foil.  Depending on your base color, you may not need to see your stylist for up to three months because the color appears more natural,” says color expert Michealle Vanderpool.

If transitional color help is needed, face framing and part-area touch-ups may be done every 6-8 weeks while maintaining the integrity of the hair. In the long run, this saves time and money while also keeping your hair healthier.
